השכונה נקראת על שמו של איש עסקים יווני בשם אקסרכוס, שהקים כלבו גדול בלב השכונה במאה ה-19.
אחד ממוסדות ההשכלה הגבוהה החשובים ביוון, האוניברסיטה הטכנית של אתונה, ה'פוליטכני' של אתונה, ממוקם בשכונת אקסרכיה.
השכונה הייתה על סף תהליך ג'נטריפיקציה, שעוררה התנגדות רבה בקרב תושבי השכונה. אחד הביטויים הבולטים הוא הגרפיטי המחאתי, האנטי ממסדי והאנטי קפיטליסטי, שהינו סימן ההיכר של השכונה. באופן אירוני, דווקא הגרפיטי מושך לשכונה הרבה תיירים, שבעקבותיהם מגיעים עסקים חדשים, מלונות, בתי קפה אופנתיים ומסעדות.

בזוגראפו פועלים קווי אוטובוס רבים שמקשרים את השכונה לשאר חלקי אתונה. ולאיליסה מגיע קו המטרו.
זוגראפו היא אי של שלווה באתונה התוססת. השכונה היפה והירוקה מציעה בריחה מההמולה העירונית, למרות שהיא מרוחקת רק 4 קילומטר מלב אתונה.
זוגראפו היא ישות מוניציפלית נפרדת מאתונה, למרות מיקומה המרכזי, והיא בעצם פרבר של אתונה. היא ממוקמת בחלקה המזרחי של אתונה, למרגלות הר אימיטוס (Hymettus).
בזוגראפו מתגוררים כ-70,000 תושבים והיא כוללת גם את שכונת איליסיה (Ilisia) ששוכנת במזרח וגם את שכונת גאודי (Goudi) שממוקמת בצפון. שכונת איליסה מכונה על שם נהר הליליסוס (Ilissos) שעובר בה ומוסיף אווירת טבע מיוחדת למקום.
מהחלק הגבוה של השכונה ניתן לראות את האקרופוליס מתנשא מעל הכל, יפה ביום ומואר כולו בלילה.
במרחק הליכה ממרינה פליסבוס, שוכן רחוב ״איוס אלכסנדרוס״, שהוא שילוב של אורבניות ושל כפריות מיוחדת, עם אווירה טובה ומבחר חנויות מעניין.
בשכונה יש קווי אוטובוס, וכן קו 4 בטראם שמגיע ישירות לכיכר סינטגמה.
שכונת Paleo Faliro היא שכונה יוקרתית הממוקמת בצידה הדרומי של אתונה, בקרבת הים. שוהי שכונה שמציעה מצד אחד שקט עם איכות חיים למגורים, קצת כמו הצפון הישן של תל אביב, ומצד יש קרבה לים, למרינה של פלסיבוס ולמלונות הרבים שלאורכה.
לאורך קו החוף של השכונה מפוזרים חופי ים רבים, עם מים בצבע טורקיז. חלק מהחופים מוכרזים וחלק לא. על קו החוף מפוזרים בתי קפה, טברנות, ודוכנים רבים. זהו מקום נעים להליכה עם שקיעות נפלאות, דייגים, יאכטות למכביר ומבט על נמל פיראוס ברקע.
